Understanding the Sacred
This site is about exploring the sacred from the perspective of religious inherence, the experience of the world as inherently sacred. It is ultimately about a sacred located entirely in the real world, rescued from all association with religions of the supernatural and the like. The exploration undertaken is seen as a necessary first step towards the development of the truly human religion that we assuredly need.
Authorities on the Sacred
An important aspect of the exploration has been engagement with those authorities who have written significantly about the supernatural sacred: James, Durkheim, Otto, Eliade and Douglas. The method of this engagement has been to summarise the key works of these authorities, then to comment on them separately.
The human sacred that is slowly emerging is something entirely different from the supernatural sacred. It is about people's authentic personal attachments to their real world.
The corresponding human religion is going to be about state rather than experience. It is going to be about maintaining a certain state of being in relation to this world rather than about attaining discrete experiences of some other world.
Mediation
Notions of mediation are fundamental to this site: the cultural mediation of human experience in general and of religious experience in particular. Indeed, the project of this site may be understood as to challenge contemporary cultural mediations in order that the inherent sacred may be recognised.
Moreover, the sacred can be understood as that by which cultural mediations are inspired and validated. In looking for the inherent sacred, we are looking for new cultural mediations in place of those deriving from the supernatural sacred and its contemporary analogues.
None of the articles on this site is offered in a definitive form. All are subject to an ongoing process of refinement, emendation, expansion, maybe even retraction.
